Paths To Literacy
The information on this site ranges from a basic overview of literacy to various stages of development and special challenges, as well as an exploration of different media (print, braille, auditory strategies).
It includes original content, as well as links to other sites and resources available on the web. Some materials have been summarized, with a link to the full resource. In cases where information is available free of charge on the web, we have linked directly to articles and other resources. In cases where information is copyright protected, we have linked to the web address or URL where more information can be found.
This website is a collaboration between Perkins School for the Blind and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). While our two schools have worked closely together for many years, this is our first cooperative venture online. We hope that by combining our resources and expertise we can help to stimulate discussion in the field on the many different aspects of literacy for students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with additional disabilities or who are deafblind.
Discussions started in 2010, as we realized that both of our schools were interested in developing a site that specifically focused on literacy. We recognized that resources were disappearing from the web, and we wanted to create a repository so that valuable information would not be lost. We also wanted to offer a place for people to share ideas and new information.
Whether you are brand new in the field or a veteran teacher, a parent or family member, or any interested member of the community, we invite you to share your voice!
